Internal Family Systems (IFS) Treatment

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is a powerful method of therapy that views the mind as a collection of different internal “parts”. These parts can be thought of as distinct personalities or sub-personalities within an individual. IFS therapy helps individuals identify and work with these parts to achieve greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and healing.

The founder of IFS therapy, Richard Schwartz, discovered this approach while working with his clients. He noticed that when individuals felt a strong emotional response, they tended to speak of themselves in the third person, using phrases like “a part of me feels this way” or “another part of me wants to do this”. Schwartz began to recognize that these “parts” were distinct, and that they were often in conflict with one another.

IFS therapy seeks to help individuals understand and integrate their internal parts. This is done by building a relationship with each part, understanding its function, and working to address any underlying traumas or negative beliefs that may be causing conflict.

The therapist helps guide the individual through the process of identifying and working with each part, allowing the individual to explore their own internal world with curiosity and compassion. This process of internal exploration can lead to profound healing, as individuals learn to embrace all parts of themselves and find a greater sense of inner peace and harmony.

One of the unique features of IFS therapy is its focus on the concept of “Self”. The Self is an innate quality that exists within each of us, and is characterized by qualities like calmness, clarity, and compassion. By connecting with the Self, individuals are able to find a sense of stability and guidance as they work through the various parts of themselves.
